Former Toledo President Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Corruption in Odebrecht Case | Peru

Peru’s judiciary said former President Alejandro Toledo has been sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison.

He was found guilty of conspiracy and money laundering offenses in the Interoceánica Sur case, counts II and III.

“There was a conspiracy with interested parties such as Odebrecht so that, through a bribe of $35 million, a Brazilian company received a tender for the construction of sections 2 and 3 of the Interoceanic Highway, which caused damage to the state,” the verdict indicates, as reported by the Judiciary through its profile on social network X.

With this verdict, Toledo becomes the first former Peruvian president to be convicted Operation Lava Jato that broke out in Brazil and it drew the construction company Odebrecht into an international network through which it established institutional corruption in more than a dozen Latin American countries.

Toledo demanded payments even when he was no longer president: resolution

The court, chaired by Zaida Perez, took into account in its ruling the statements of the former superintendent of Odebrecht in Peru, Jorge Barata, as well as the late businessman Josef Maiman, supported by documents such as money transfers and transactions, examinations and others.

The Judiciary said that in the conspiracy case, the court alleges that “a series of irregularities, unusual interference and acceleration of the tender process for the above-mentioned works, illegal activities related to Toledo Manrique have been demonstrated.”

The court concluded that Toledo Manrique, in order to receive a bribe, convinced his friend Joseph Maiman to become his intermediary in receiving a bribe from Odebrecht.
