At least six people have died in Cuba due to the passage of Hurricane Oscar, which struck the eastern part of the island 24 hours ago.
The weather event coincided with a string of power outages that have left much of the Caribbean country without power since Friday.
“Emergency situation in Imias and San Antonio del Sur (east). Early data shows 6 deaths have been reported in the historically dry lands. The President also explained that in the current situation, he decided to cancel his participation in the BRICS summit, which is taking place this week in the Russian city of Kazan.
That is why the Cuban delegation will be represented by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, who will meet with Russian and Chinese Presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, respectively, as well as other meetings with heads of state and government that have been planned.
The power outage sparked public protests and casseroles in some citiesin response to which Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel warned this Sunday that his government will not tolerate “vandalism.”
The National Electrotechnical Union (UNE), dependent on Cuba’s Ministry of Energy and Mining, announced that Havana’s electrical system had been restored, although it showed several faults. (Europe Press).
