Qualcomm introduces Snapdragon 8 Elite with PC cores and more AI

The Snapdragon 8 Elite is The most powerful mobile chipset Qualcomm has ever created. The semiconductor company has just presented it at the trade fair Snapdragon Summit 2024 and bets – of course – on more artificial intelligence, even if at the level of characteristics it is its biggest novelty new CPU cores which include and aim to bridge the performance gap between smartphones and computers.

If the “Elite” name associated with Snapdragon sounds familiar, that’s because Qualcomm released them a few months ago for new laptops for the Copilot+ PC platform. These SoCs assemble the cores CPU “Oryon”.which are just the biggest news of the Snapdragon 8 Elite. To understand each other, Qualcomm has now moved them from laptops to mobile phones and tablets.

Snapdragon 8 Elite, higher performance

The Qualcomm chip uses the same architecture as in the PC, with eight core CPUs (two Prime with a frequency of up to 4.32 GHz and six Performance up to 3.53 GHz). The company promises massive performance improvements raw processing, in graphics and in tasks that involve AI tasks.

Snapdragon 8 Elite

Compared to the most powerful mobile SoC to date, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 promises:

CPU improvements

  • 45% increase in single core performance
  • 45% increase in multi-core performance
  • 44% energy savings

GPU enhancements

  • Overall graphics improvement by 40%.
  • 35% improvement in ray tracing
  • 40% energy savings

NPU improvements

  • 45% faster NPU
  • Improved power per watt by 45%

Qualcomm ensures that the new chips will consume approx 27% less energy than Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, with significant performance improvements. Impressive if it delivers… you already know that marketing promises don’t usually translate into the real world. It’s also worth remembering that although the new mobile chips use the same architecture as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, they perform the same tasks. But the line between mobile phones and PCs is blurring. As long as Qualcomm’s promises are kept.

Other interesting characteristics are those of connectivity and for them Qualcomm Snapdragon Also FastConnect 7900 wireless system with support for “AI 7 Enhanced Wi-Fi”.

It also includes improved camera support with up to 320 megapixel photo capture (or up to 4K video capture at 120 fps) and AI-enhanced photo features. It supports 24-bit, 96kHz lossless audio and 4K displays (at 60Hz) or 240Hz displays (with QHD+ resolution).

Mobile phones with Snapdragon 8 Elite?

The first devices with the new chipsets will be announced “in the next few weeks”. From what’s been announced, they’ll have great adoption to power the top line of all manufacturers that work with Android and buy some of their chips from Qualcomm. In an incomplete list you can include Samsung (Galaxy S25), ASUS (ROG Phone 9), Honor (Magic 7), iQOO, OnePlus, Oppo, RealMe (GT 7 Pro), Vivo and Xiaomi in the 13 series.

These Snapdragon 8 Elites are aiming really well, but as I said: if the marketing translates into the real world. Something that hasn’t happened with chipsets used in laptops.
