Ten people were hospitalized and an elderly Colorado man died from an E. coli infection linked to a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control said Tuesday.

McDonald’s deleted it in advance chopped onion and quarter pounders businesses in the affected states while the investigation continues, the company told the CDC.

According to the post, these burgers may be temporarily unavailable in some states.

McDonald’s did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

McDonald’s shares fell 9.2% in after-hours trading.

Symptoms of E. coli*

Most people infected with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli experience severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting.

Symptoms usually begin 3 to 4 days after the bacteria enters the body.

Most people recover without treatment in 5 to 7 days.

Some people may develop serious kidney problems (hemolytic uremic syndrome, also called HUS) and need to be hospitalized.
