In the spring of 2024, NASA launched the ACS3 experimental satellite equipped with a next-generation solar sail into orbit.
ACS3’s main tasks include:
- Testing of flexible polymer and carbon fiber composite poles. They can expand from small structures into rigid and lightweight uprights, each seven meters long;
- Maneuvering in orbit using a solar sail. The surface area is 80 square meters.
According to the statement made by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration, it has already been revealed that the data collected during the tests is very valuable. Engineers noted that a slight bend in one of the four supports would not prevent the satellite from maneuvering during a technology demonstration in the near future.
