Green light for Blackwell: Fixed design errors

Jensen Huang confirms that a design flaw in the Blackwell chips has been fixed. Production is back on track for first deliveries in the fourth quarter.

The production issues with Blackwell have been resolved. This is confirmed by none other than CEO Jensen Huang himself, who can be found in Denmark this week. The first units rolled off the assembly line in early August, but Nvidia had to recall them due to a design flaw. It took some time, but this design flaw has now been corrected.

Thanks to TSMC

Huang would like to thank TSMC, Nvidia’s production partner. The CEO thus rejects rumors that the problems with Blackwell had led to tensions with TSMC. The error was “one hundred percent Nvidia’s fault,” says an honest Huang.

Nvidia’s Blackwell chips take two squares of silicon the size of the company’s previous chips and combine them into a component that is up to 30 times faster. This design was intended to make Blackwell the most powerful GPU to hit the market to date, but a flaw in the design resulted in yields being lower than hoped.

Increase production

Now that this problem has been solved, Blackwell’s production can be gradually increased to larger quantities. Nvidia plans to start delivering the first commercial samples in the fourth quarter, much to the delight of the tech industry. Nvidia remains the leading provider of data center GPUs, even as AMD tries to cut corners.

If you haven’t placed an order with Blackwell yet, you should make the effort now. The chips are now expected to be sold out for the next twelve months.
