The update has been widely discussed for reasons other than what Microsoft would like, and attention has focused on the improvements that the new version brings. With Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft is introducing a new way to install updates. The Windows operating system consists of several files grouped into different components. During a Windows update, these components are updated or maintained.

A renewed maintenance stack makes the process more efficient by introducing parallel processing of components. After the components are first read, the results are cached for later reuse when the component is referenced again later in the installation process.

That sounds very technical, so Microsoft illustrates the efficiency gains with numbers. Compared to previous major Windows updates, Windows 11 24H2’s installation time is 45 percent faster and its reboot time is almost forty percent faster. The time the CPU has to run is reduced by fifteen percent.

This information refers to a well-maintained PC. On a PC that hasn’t received an update for eighteen months, the installation time saving is 43 percent and the restart time is 33.5 percent. CPU time is then reduced by 25 percent.

Microsoft will use the new servicing stack for Windows 11 starting with version 24H2. Monthly security and function updates run much more smoothly. If they don’t crash your device of course…
