Huawei has wanted to completely separate itself from Android for a while. He started after the United States blockade by creating his own app store, App Gallery. It now has its own operating system, independent of Android and supported by app developers.

The company has formalized the first public beta of HarmonyOS Next for high-end mobile phone users in China. It is much more than a ROM: it is a full operating system.

Huawei introduced HarmonyOS as a standalone operating system to Android. Problem? It was really still Android with a different name. HarmonyOS Next is the first real leap forward in which Huawei has truly created an operating system from scratch.

This system no longer keeps any secrets; Huawei showed how it works in the public beta version. The goal is to perform the migration with all your devices: mobile phones, smartwatches, headphones, etc.

HarmonyOS Next uses a self-developed microkernel based on the open OpenHarmony kernel. Not compatible with Android appshowever, it uses its own compiler and runs under the Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) framework. According to Richard Yu, there are more than 15,000 applications compatible with the system and this number will increase in the coming months.

Here, the alliance is made with giants such as Aurora Store, one of the alternative stores to Google Play Store. We’ll see if other proposals join as time goes on.

HarmonyOS Next has a consistent visual identity across device interfaces. Although it is independent of Android, it is very similar to previous versions of HarmonyOS, which has the same design as Android-based EMUI.

Currently, this system is available for Huawei Pura 70, Huawei Pocket 2 and Huawei MatePad Pro 11 in its country. Huawei will continue to use EMUI in Europe until further notice.
