Amazon to launch online cheap goods store to replace scandalous Temu service

The Information’s reporters obtained insider information originally sent to Amazon sellers detailing some of the price restrictions for this new storefront.

How is it going to be?

The store declares that the upper price limit in the new store is determined as follows:

  • $8 for jewelry.
  • $9 for linens.
  • $13 for guitars.
  • $20 for sofas.

The shipping price from this store is expected to be half that of Amazon’s main site. All items will be shipped from a warehouse in Guangdong Province, China. According to sources, orders placed from this storefront will be shipped slower — nine to 11 dayshowever, sellers will be charged lower commissions for order fulfillment.

The publication concludes that the new platform will differ significantly from the company’s usual approach and will be much more in line with Temu’s pricing policy. But for now It is not clear when and in which countries the store will open. It will work.

What’s wrong with Temu?

Launched in 2022, the Chinese service took the world by storm almost immediately. It’s similar to AliExpress, but offers cheaper products, permanent discounts that never disappear, free shipping, and bonuses for new users. Therefore, people all over the world very quickly paid attention to this and provided additional advertising on social networks: they show the unpacking of all bins purchased with so-called discounts.

Numerous investigations into Temu have revealed a questionable business model:

  • First, it was called a “privacy nightmare” due to the large amount of data collected from a smartphone that it did not need as a store. Moreover, the company actively trades them.
  • Secondly, the goods there are often low-quality, made of toxic materials (phthalates, formaldehyde and lead have been found even in children’s belongings).
  • Third, there is evidence that the company used slave labor to produce its products.
  • Fourth, the company sells fake products and ships products that do not match the description on the website.
  • Fifth, it has created and maintains terrible working conditions: people work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week.

This is far from a complete list of accusations. So if Amazon launches its alternative, it will be at least a partial salvation for Western users, because their data will now be relatively safe.
