McDonald’s in the US removed fresh onions from its menu on Thursday after the vegetable was named as the likely source of an E. coli outbreak that sickened 49 people and killed one. Burger King is also removing fresh onions from its menu.

About 5% of Burger King locations have removed onions from menus, a spokesperson said in a statement. McDonald’s said Thursday that Taylor Farms was the supplier of the recalled chopped onions..

The company has recalled several lots of yellow onions produced at its Colorado plant, according to a memo released Wednesday. Food USAone of the largest food service providers in the United States.

Previous E. coli outbreaks have hampered sales at major fast-food restaurants as customers avoid affected chains for fear of getting sick.

Regulators are still investigating whether this could affect McDonald’s beef burgers, but E. coli is killed in beef when cooked properly.and McDonald’s Quarter Pounder serves chopped raw onions. McDonald’s has removed the Quarter Pounder from about a fifth of its U.S. restaurants, including in Colorado, Kansas, Utah and Wyoming, as well as parts of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico and Oklahoma.

A LOT OF CLIENTS

According to Reuters, after the outbreak at McDonald’s, many Colorado residents continued to eat at the American giant. Some avoided hamburgers.

Charity Atkinson was eating a 20-count box of Chicken McNuggets in the McDonald’s parking lot in Longmont Wednesday afternoon, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Denver.

Atkinson said she is not concerned about the outbreak, but noted that for now I avoided hamburgers.

“I hope this all gets sorted out very soon because my mom loves quarter pounders with cheese,” Atkinson said. “I hope they will have better health protection soon.”

At Burger King, Monica and Jesus Martinez were eating a bag of hamburgers and fries while sitting in their car and said they decided to frequent Burger King largely because of the outbreak at McDonald’s.

“I’m worried! I like the Quarter Pounder burger, but I’m really worried,” Monica Martinez said. “It will definitely influence my choices of where we eat in the future.”

The E. coli outbreak was first reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in late September.

The USDA said Wednesday that one of its government partners also tested beef samples for E. coli.
