Meta will build a worldwide submarine cable

Meta reportedly plans to build a new worldwide submarine cable stretching from one end of the United States to the other via the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. According to the Subseacables blog written by industry columnist Roderick Beck and subsea cable entrepreneur Sunil Tagare, $2 billion is being invested in the 40,000 kilometers of cable.

Two possible routes for the cable have been suggested. Tagare suggested that the cable, called W for its shape, would run from the east coast of the US to India with a stop in South Africa, then from India to the west coast of the US with another stop in Darwin, Australia.

Instead, Beck suggested the cable would run from Mumbai to Singapore and potentially extend to Australia and Japan. He added that the cable could also include a landing point in Lisbon before heading to the West African coast. The estimated bandwidth of the cable is 320 Tbit/s.

The cable will completely avoid the Red Sea, South China Sea and Egypt; All areas where submarine cables have been problematic in recent years. The cable, which is expected to be 100 percent owned by Meta, is expected to reach Jio’s businesses in India.

DCD He reached out to Meta but he declined to comment.

Meta currently deals with several subsea cables, including the Echo, Bifrost, Havhingsten, Amite and Anjana cables. The 2Africa cable is now partially operational.
