A new Chinese resistance magnet of 42 Tesla has set a world record, surpassing the previous 41.4 Tesla. On September 22, a resistive magnet in China created a permanent magnetic field of 42 Tesla, setting a new world record for such magnets.

This is another major breakthrough by the Strong Magnetic Field Laboratory of the Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences (CHMFL) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, following the success of the world’s strongest 45.22 Tesla hybrid magnet in 2022. The new magnet marks a new milestone in the development of resistive magnet technology.

After nearly four years of continuous efforts, scientists and engineers renewed the structure of the magnet, optimized the production process, and finally created a permanent magnetic field of 42 Tesla with a power supply of 32.3 MW, reaching the Magnet’s specified level of 41.4 Tesla. They broke the record of . US National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in 2017.

Strengthening scientific research

The new magnet not only better meets the practical needs of magnet users, providing powerful experimental conditions for researching new phenomena and discovering new laws, but also lays an important technical basis for the creation of stronger magnets in China.

There are three types of high permanent magnets, resistive magnets, superconducting magnets, and hybrid magnets, which are a combination of the two. Resistive magnets were the first strong field magnets used by scientists with flexible and fast control of the magnetic field. They can produce magnetic fields much stronger than superconducting magnets to date.

“Resistive magnets and superconducting magnets are ‘single masters’, while hybrid magnets are ‘mixed pair combinations’,” said Guanli Kaung, academic director of CHMFL, making a comparison between magnet development and table tennis.

“We won the Mixed Championship by a huge margin in 2022. Today we won the singles,” said Quang.

A strong magnetic field is an extreme experimental condition necessary for materials science research and is a powerful tool for major scientific discoveries. For decades, scientists around the world have made important discoveries under the influence of a strong magnetic field, and more than 10 such scientific achievements have received the Nobel Prize.

The development of magnetic technology has become an important area of research. There are currently five permanent strong magnetic field laboratories in the world, located in China, France, Japan, the Netherlands and the United States.
