NASA Astronaut Hospitalized: Solving Medical Mystery After Crew-8 Space Odyssey

Following the crash of the SpaceX Crew-8 mission, one astronaut remained under medical supervision and the others returned safely to Houston. The crew completed a mission lasting more than 235 days in space, conducting scientific research aboard the International Space Station.

The NASA astronaut who landed safely on Earth as part of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-8 mission on Friday experienced a medical problem. NASA astronauts Matthew Dominik, Michael Barratt, Jeanette Epps and Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleksandr Grebenkin were flown to Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola, Florida, for medical evaluation. After examination at the hospital, the three crew members were admitted to NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston.

An astronaut is being kept under observation at Ascension Sacred Heart as a precaution. To respect the astronaut’s privacy, NASA is not releasing further details about the astronaut’s condition or identity.

SpaceX Dragon performed a routine approach and landing on its return to Earth. The recovery of the crew and spacecraft went smoothly. During routine medical examinations on the evacuation ship, an additional examination of crew members was recommended with great caution. We are grateful to Ascension Sacred Heart for their support during this time and proud of our team for their swift action to ensure the safety of our crew members.

Crew-8 crew members boarded their Dragon spacecraft near Pensacola, Florida, to complete a 235-day mission, 232 of which were spent aboard the International Space Station for scientific research. NASA will provide additional information as it becomes available.
