The latest news from OnePlus confirms that the company’s upcoming flagship phone series will come pre-installed with the Gemini app as the default assistant app, replacing Google Assistant. This is not expected to be a mistake because in April, OnePlus mistakenly confirmed that “Gemini 1.0 Ultra” would be coming to its devices later this year.

If all goes well, OnePlus won’t be the first brand to drop Google Assistant as the default assistant for Gemini AI. Motorola and even Google itself have moved away from Google Assistant. Google announced that Gemini AI will be the default assistant on Pixel 9 or later phones. Additionally, Pixel phones with 2GB of RAM or more will support downloading the standalone Gemini app from the Play Store.

Notably, Google Assistant will still be available on OnePlus phones, but it won’t be a default option. To use Google Assistant instead of Gemini, users will need to open the Gemini app and switch back to Assistant manually. For OnePlus phones currently in the market and soon to be updated to OxygenOS 15, Assistant will continue to be available on the device unless users choose to install Gemini.

According to BusinessToday, “Upcoming OnePlus flagship series phones will come pre-installed with Google Gemini as the default assistant. Users of other OnePlus smartphones can download the separate Google Gemini app, but Google Assistant will work as the default assistant.”

OnePlus already has a device that will enjoy Gemini Assistant by default. It looks like the OnePlus 13 will be the brand’s first smartphone to ditch Google Assistant for Gemini, as the phone has already announced that it will launch in China on October 31st, with a global release expected in the coming months. We recently saw the OnePlus 13 unboxing video and dived into the specs and software.
