Latin American groups this Sunday demanded an apology from the former president’s campaign Donald Trumpafter one of the participants at the Republican candidate’s rally in Madison Square Garden in New York. said that Puerto Rico is a “floating island of garbage.”
The complaint specifically names the host and comedian. Tony Hinchcliffe who was one of over twelve speakers leading up to the former President’s address (2017–2021) to approximately 20,000 supporters at the iconic arena.
In his participation, Hinchcliffe stated that “There is literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”
The comedian also made fun of Latinos and warned that “They like having children.”
Roman Palomares, national president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), immediately condemned the comments and said in a statement that The Trump campaign should have immediately rejected and condemned comedian’s words.
“As usual, (Trump) remained silent, and in the process offended millions of people who are proud to be Puerto Ricans who live on the island and throughout the United States,” the activist emphasized.

He added that the Republican campaign’s tolerance for offensive humor, especially toward Puerto Rico and its people, “highlights a disturbing pattern of neglect for the island’s people and their concerns.”
Palomares criticized the campaign and noted that this fact is preview of “what to expect” if the former president returns to the White House.
LULAC demanded official apology from the Trump campaign and rejection of the comedian.
Organizations such as Voto Latino, UnidosUS, Mi Familia Vota, America’s Voice and the Hispanic Federation also They rejected the comedian’s comments.
Maria Teresa Kumar, president of Voto Latino, said in a statement that the comedian’s comments show that the Republican platform “This is xenophobia and, in particular, hatred of Latino families.”

For her part, Janet Murguia, president of the UnidosUS Action Fund, warned that statements at the Trump rally “this is not an isolated event” and this is consistent with the former president’s rhetoric for nearly a decade.
The former Republican president was criticized by Puerto Rican figures such as Mark Anthony who in a recent ad indicated that he had not forgotten what the Trump presidency was like, and especially what he “did and said” about Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria’s devastation on the island in 2017.
“He blocked billions of dollars in aid while thousands of people died. “I remember when we needed clean water and electricity, Trump threw paper towels at them and called Puerto Rico ‘dirty and poor,’” Anthony said in the ad.
