Proximus provides “fiber optic coverage on the road” to 40 percent of the Belgian population

Proximus is expanding its fiber footprint, providing “fiber on the road” to 40 percent of the Belgian population.

Proximus reports its financial results for the third quarter of 2024. The telecommunications provider has exceeded the mark of two million households and businesses connected to the fiber optic network. This means the company can connect 2,081,000 households and businesses, which corresponds to “road coverage” of around 40 percent. Proximus’ other subscriptions also saw an increase this year. The number of TV subscriptions and landline voice subscriptions continues to decline.

40 percent “coverage on the road”

At the end of September, Proximus connected 2,081,000 households and companies to fiber optic connections. “This quarter, 98,000 additional homes and businesses were connected in the 167 cities where we are actively expanding fiber. With our own footprint and that of our partners, fiber is now available on the road to around 40 percent of the Belgian population,” said Guillaume Boutin, CEO of Proximus Group. In addition, residential and business customers together had 519,000 active fiber optic connections, of which approximately 38,000 were added in the third quarter.

Proximus plays an important role in the fiber optic network in Belgium, but does not do it alone. The telecommunications provider has been sitting at the table with other parties such as Telenet for a long time. The providers want to reduce the high costs of laying fiber optics and reduce nuisance. Although the BIPT did not immediately rule out such collaborations, the Belgian Competition Authority (BMA) opened an investigation into the fiber optic cooperation between Proximus and Telenet.

General increase

In addition to the increase in the fiber optic market, Proximus shares the results of its other subscriptions in the report. A net 47,000 new mobile customers were added. In the private customer sector, the increase amounted to 44,000 customers. Additionally, 9,000 people signed up for a landline internet subscription this quarter. The number of TV subscriptions and landline voice subscriptions decreased by 13,000 and 35,000 subscriptions, respectively.

Proximus’ sales rose by 1.5 percent to 1.19 billion euros in the third quarter of 2024. Quarterly sales amounted to 1.63 billion euros, an increase of 0.2 percent compared to the previous year.
