Republican senators reported on Friday with TikTok CEO Shaw Zi Chu that the app allows the streaming of Russian content but bans other videos.
According to Ukrinform, this was reported by Reuters.
“Recent reports show that TikTok has allowed Russian state media to flood the platform with dangerous military propaganda. “We must not inflame the lies that fuel public support for the war against Ukraine.”
The letter stated that the senators were “deeply concerned” that TikTok “allows the spread of military propaganda among the Russian people.”
In March, a Chinese app said it was suspending video streaming and uploading to its platform in Russia as it was examining the effects of a new media law signed by Putin.
Senators say TikTok “failed to enforce this policy” and “closed the loophole too late”.
The letter said that previously published pro-Kremlin content was “misleading” and was not removed, “creating an easily accessible archive of military propaganda.” The authors of the letter ask the TikTok administration to make a statement on this matter.
TikTok, owned by Beijing-based Internet technology company ByteDance, has long cast doubt on the collection of personal data in the US. These include the Chinese government’s ability to access user information.
TikTok is one of the most popular social networking apps in the world, with over 1 billion active users.
