Apple Intelligence will continue to be available to iPhone and iPad users in Europe starting April 2025.
Apple opens the doors to its AI suite for European Apple users. Initially, Apple Intelligence appeared to only be available to European macOS users. Apple did not agree with the strict rules within the DMA. During the launch of the new iOS 18.1, Apple announced that Apple Intelligence will be rolling out to iPhone and iPad users in the EU in April 2025.
Apple Intelligence is Apple’s first AI suite with various AI solutions for iPhone, Mac and iPad. The company could no longer lag behind its competitors and began to catch up with this AI suite. For many Apple enthusiasts in Europe, things weren’t looking so rosy. Apple would initially only release the AI suite in Europe for macOS users. Now, at the start of iOS18.1, the company announced that Apple Intelligence is coming to Europe.
Apple announced this in an announcement. “Mac users in the EU can use Apple Intelligence in US English with macOS Sequoia 15.1.” Apple Intelligence features will roll out to iPhone and iPad users in the EU in April. This includes many of Apple Intelligence’s core features, including writing tools, Genmoji, a redesigned Siri with better language understanding, ChatGPT integration and more.”
The reason Apple initially didn’t want to bring its AI suite to Europe has everything to do with the Digital Markets Act. Apple has been appointed a gatekeeper and therefore has to comply with stricter rules. One of those rules states that Apple must open its platforms to outside organizations, and the company initially didn’t want that for Apple Intelligence. It is not clear what was decisive.
Apple is still unclear why this is suddenly possible. In a statement to TechCrunch, the company said: “Since the announcement of Apple Intelligence, we have been working on a way to deliver as many features as possible in the EU that are DMA compliant while maintaining user privacy and security.” to determine what additional product development would be required. We look forward to bringing Apple Intelligence capabilities to users in the EU in future software updates.”
