Meta is reportedly working on its own AI search engine to become more independent of Google and Microsoft.

Meta, the company behind Facebook, is working on an AI search engine. The technology giant wants to become more independent from Google and Microsoft. The Verge saw a report from The Information that said the search engine would be used to provide meta-AI users with answers to current events. Meta AI is an integrated chatbot in Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram.

Big plans for Meta AI

Europe does not yet have access to Meta’s AI systems due to disagreements with the European Commission over AI legislation. However, the chatbot is popular in the countries where it is available and had nearly 500 million monthly active users as of August, according to Mark Zuckerberg.

Currently, the meta AI bot still relies on Google and Microsoft Bing to answer questions about current events. That could change quickly, as Meta has been working on building an information database for eight months and has signed a multi-year contract with the Reuters news agency. This allows the bot to incorporate news facts from Reuters into its responses.

In addition to Meta, Google, Microsoft and OpenAI also rely on AI-based search experiences. Bing recently received AI-generated search results similar to those of Google. OpenAI has launched its own search engine called SearchGPT based on its powerful AI models.
