DANA hits Spain: torrential rains and tornadoes kill people and go missing

Spain suffers from high-level isolated depression (known as DANA), causing unusually heavy rainfall, as well as tornadoes and river floods that washed away vehicles.

A partial balance says seven people are missing, but emergency services are overwhelmed and posts on social media show incidents of people being trapped or swept away by floodwaters.

Carlos Mason, president of the Generalitat of Valencia, confirmed that there were deaths, although at the conference he chose not to give their numbers.

The most affected areas are the south and east of the Iberian Peninsula; Regions such as Valencia and Albacete are on high alert.

Overflowing rivers and streams have left people trapped in their vehicles.

One of the most common cases is that of Maite Jurado Lopez, who became trapped, clinging to a plant that prevented the current from dragging her away. He managed to record a video asking for help:

DANA is just beginning

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasts that the rains caused by the DANA (isolated high depression) in the peninsula and Balearic Islands will begin to lose intensity until Sunday and will finally subside on Monday when the phenomenon disappears.

DANA is located around Bay of Cadizwhere it will remain almost motionless for most of the week.

At the same time, this affected which areas of the southern and eastern third of the peninsula are most likely to receive rain, which can also be recorded intensely.

AEMET clarified that this Tuesday will be the “peak” day of the episode.

This Wednesday, DANA will move slowly to the northwest and will center around the southwest of the peninsula. However, the areas most likely to record very heavy and persistent precipitation locally would be western Andalusia and the Strait region; the surroundings of the Iberian system (especially in its eastern part), as well as in the interior of the Valencian Community and Catalonia.
