Google Chrome for computers gets new performance management tools

The Memory Saver feature in Chrome for desktop now has three different modes: Standard, Balanced, and Advanced. Memory Saver is designed to speed up the browser by limiting the memory used by inactive tabs.

Standard mode disables tabs based on your computer’s needs, while Balanced mode takes both browsing habits and system needs into account. Advanced mode disables tabs faster after you stop using them. You can select memory saving mode by going to Chrome’s Settings menu and selecting the Speed option.

Google also added a performance detection tool to Chrome. The tool can detect potential performance issues you may encounter and suggest solutions to fix the problem.

To speed up the tab you’re using, Google says Chrome will offer to deactivate tabs with additional resources. Chrome users will see a “Performance Issue Warning” notification, and clicking the included “Fix Now” option will improve browsing. Performance detection can be turned off in settings.

Chrome has additional performance controls that you can use to configure websites that need to stay active at all times, such as those that need to perform tasks in the background, and the ability to turn off visual indicators for inactive tabs.
