Apple installed fourteen computing cores in the M4 Pro and doubled the GPU capabilities of the self-built processor. The chip appears for the first time in the new Mac Mini.
Apple is equipping its newly launched Mac minis with a home-made M4 processor or an M4 Pro. The Mac Mini looks recognizable, but is more compact than ever. The device would have a footprint of 12.7 cm x 12.7 cm. Apple is proud to produce its computers in a CO2-neutral manner.
New chip
The M4 Pro chip in the new Mac Mini is intended to impress interested parties with its high performance. Compared to the M3 Pro, the new ARM-based CPU receives two additional computing cores, increasing the total number to fourteen. The GPU also gets more cores (eighteen out of sixteen). Please note: There are two variants of the M4 Pro and only the top variant gets these specifications. The other M4 Pro has twelve CPU or sixteen GPU cores.
All of this is intended to ensure higher performance, although Apple, as usual, is economical with the details. The American computer manufacturer itself praises the performance per thread, which must be high. The GPU in the M4 Pro is said to be twice as powerful as in the regular M4.
For some reason, Apple compares the new chip not to its immediate predecessor, but to the older M2 Pro. The M4 Pro is about 1.6 times faster in terms of CPU, it seems. Compared to the M1 Pro, the performance is almost doubled.
Price and availability
Apple is integrating Thunderbolt 5 for the first time. This means that the Mac Mini equipped with the M4 Pro can process data from external devices at 120 Gbit/s. For creative professionals with compatible hardware, this can be helpful when loading images, for example.
The new Mac Mini will be available from November 8th. The basic model with the regular M4 chip (equipped with ten computing cores) and 16 GB of RAM costs 719 euros including VAT. The model with the M4 Pro with all cores starts at 1,899 euros including VAT and has 24 GB RAM equipped.
