United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) condemned this Thursday that A child dies every day in Lebanon. at first Israeli army invasionunleashed on October 1, after almost a year of fighting with Shiite party militia. Hezbollah in the border area, before warning that the conflict is causing “deep emotional scars” on Lebanese minors.

Katherine Russell UNICEF Executive Director emphasized that:

Since October 4 this year, at least one child has been killed and ten injured every day. Thousands of boys and girls who survived months of constant bombing physically unharmed are now deeply troubled by the violence and chaos around them.

Thus he stated that “The current war in Lebanon is destroying the lives of children and in many cases causing serious physical wounds and deep emotional scars”while pointing out that the “devastating” number of victims is “growing every day,” at least 166 children were killed and nearly 1,170 were injured. according to the Lebanese government, from October 2023.

Across Lebanon, children are showing alarming signs of emotional, behavioral and physical distress.

Russell detailed that agency teams found children “distressed by overwhelming fear and heightened anxiety,” including “separation anxiety, fear of loss, isolation, aggression and difficulty concentrating.”

In this sense, he clarified that many minors “They suffer from sleep disturbances, nightmares, headaches and loss of appetite.”.

Without the safety, stability, and support that school provides, many of these children are left without the space they need to play, learn, and heal.

Russell understood that the conflict”“It destroys the safe and protective environment that children need.” and argued that when children are forced to suffer these “prolonged periods of traumatic stress” “They face serious health and psychological risks, and the consequences can last a lifetime.”

Thus, he emphasized that UNICEF provided psychological support to more than 9,600 children and carers from 23 September 2024, although he claims that “The healing process can only begin when the violence stops,” that is why he once again called for a ceasefire.

Lebanon’s children need a permanent and immediate ceasefire so they can safely access basic services and begin to recover from the trauma of war. We must act now to prevent more children from being injured or killed and to protect the future of all children in Lebanon.
