Google announced new updates to Google Maps to improve the driving experience, increase immersion and deploy artificial intelligence in more places. Gemini is expanding its reach even further, and now you can enter natural language queries into the Maps search bar and let the AI take control.

For example, Google explained in a blog post that you can search for “things to do with friends at night” and Gemini will suggest a few places for you to explore. Gemini will also create summary reviews of venues that you can read, so you know at a glance what you’re getting into.

These Gemini updates will begin rolling out to Android and iOS in the US this week. In the coming months, Search will also introduce AI-powered review summaries and the ability to ask detailed questions about places.

The search giant said its 20-year-old mapping service attracts more than 2 billion monthly users. Google updates more than 100 million maps every day after using artificial intelligence to analyze billions of images along with data from local partners and the community.

Google announced that it has made an update to its navigation system that makes it easier to discover places along the route. When you start navigation and tap “add stop,” Maps will show the main landmarks, attractions, scenic spots, and restaurants along your route.

The updated navigation interface will clearly display traffic lanes, crosswalks and traffic signs to help navigate unfamiliar terrain with multiple lanes, forks and exits. You’ll also be able to report weather conditions along your route, including flooded, unplowed and poor visibility roads.

Additionally, the navigation interface highlights which lane to take when connecting, and this is indicated by a blue line on the lane markers.

Google Maps Immersive View has also received a major expansion. Starting this week on Android and iOS, the feature will be available in 150 cities worldwide, including Brussels, Kyoto and Frankfurt. For those who don’t know, Immersive View allows you to experience what stadiums, parks, and routes look like using artificial intelligence, imagery, and computer vision.
