Windows 10, currently the most popular desktop operating system, has less than a year left until mainstream support ends. Microsoft recognizes that not every user can currently upgrade to Windows 11, so consumers will be able to get an additional year of support for just $30. But as the death of Windows 10 approaches, more and more users are switching to Windows 11.


According to the latest data from Statcounter, Windows 11 is becoming increasingly popular and its adoption rate is increasing significantly. Microsoft’s three-year-old operating system increased its market share by 2.13 points in October 2024, reaching an all-time record of 35.55%. For reference, a year ago Windows 11 was at 26.17% with little change from month to month and even losing user base at one point.

As Windows 11 grows, Windows 10 loses market share proportionately. Now the operating system has approached the 60% mark for the first time since September 2019. According to Statcounter, approximately 60.95% of all Windows users are using Windows 10.

  2. Windows 11 — 35.55% (+2.13 points)

  5. Windows XP — 0.28% (-0.06 points)

In terms of the overall operating system market, which includes Android, iOS, macOS, and Linux, Windows is the second most popular operating system. In October 2024, it occupied 26.83 percent with an increase of 0.13 points.

  3. iOS — 18.49% (+0.37 points)
  4. macOS — 5.67% (+0.06 points)
  5. Unknown — 1.77% (+0.07 points)
