Founder and CEO Nothing Carl Pei offered a look at the company’s future software goals: There is no operating system with deeper AI integration.
Pei acknowledged that smartphones remain the most important tools for communicating with others and accessing information, but he also touched on the current duality of Google and Apple.
“We’re thinking about how to maneuver here,” Pei said, suggesting that Nothing’s goal is to break new ground by creating an operating system specifically designed for enhanced user experience.
But Nothing is still a relatively small player in the smartphone industry compared to giants like Apple and Google. CEO Carl Pei suggests that directing all resources to developing a completely independent operating system may not be the most strategic choice.
Instead, it aims to incorporate advanced artificial intelligence (using models created by larger tech companies) into Nothing OS to improve its functionality. Although Pei did not reveal details, his comments indicated that there would be major improvements in Nothing OS and that it could change the way users interact with phones.
According to Pei, AI has simplified the operating system development process, enabling levels of customization not yet available on other platforms. While he rejected building from scratch by focusing on user experience rather than basic technical fundamentals, he did highlight the potential to make smartphones smarter by leveraging the vast amounts of information they collect.
But this should not be called an artificial intelligence operating system
While Pei declined to comment on whether additional funding would be sought for the project, he noted that nothing could proceed on its own if necessary. He explained that artificial intelligence will play an important, if not central, role. “We shouldn’t call it an AI operating system,” he explained, adding that real success will depend on “who can create the best fit for the market” and deliver an engaging user experience.

What is important in this context is that Huawei has developed HarmonyOS Next, a completely new operating system designed to be different from the traditional Android system.
Unlike previous versions of HarmonyOS that were compatible with Android apps, HarmonyOS Next was built from the ground up with its own app ecosystem and advanced privacy features that Huawei hopes will make it truly independent. Although this operating system has been designed with geopolitical constraints in mind, it aims to ensure flawless operation on multiple devices across the entire Huawei ecosystem.
