Crew of Chinese space station returns after six months in orbit

China’s three-person crew returned to Earth early Monday after more than six months aboard the Tiangong space station, state news agency Xinhua reported.

Ye Guangfu, Li Kong and Li Guangsu were reported to be in “good health” after landing at the Dongfeng Landing Site in Inner Mongolia in the return capsule of their Shenzhou spacecraft, Xinhua reported.

The three men departed for Tiangong in late April and were greeted on October 30 by three new astronauts, including the country’s only female spaceflight engineer, and spent a five-day transfer together before returning.

China is accelerating plans to realize its “space dream” under the leadership of President Xi Jinping. The space program was the third to put humans into orbit and also landed robotic rovers on Mars and the Moon.

The Tiangong Space Station is the crown jewel of the program, with teams of three astronauts rotating every three to six months. The base module was commissioned in 2021 and is planned to be used for approximately 10 years. Beijing has announced that it is ready to send a crewed mission to the Moon by 2030 and plans to establish a base on the lunar surface there.
