Microsoft has to postpone the rollout of Recall again. The company says it needs more time to make the feature “safe and reliable.”
Microsoft is keeping Recall on hold for a while. After an initial postponement in June, Microsoft planned to release a new version of Recall on the Windows Insider channel. This has been pushed back to December at the earliest as Microsoft says Recall isn’t ready yet.
The recall was announced in June with much fanfare. It had to be one of the features that demonstrated the added value of a Copilot+ PC. The Recall function takes a screenshot of your activities on your PC at regular intervals. You can use an AI-powered search function to specifically search for information in the screenshots.
However, the position was immediately met with backlash. Security experts rated the function as inadequate and Windows users were not immediately keen to have every action logged. Microsoft therefore decided to recall the function in June, but a postponement would not be a permanent adjustment.
Microsoft decided to try again and made some adjustments to Recall. A key change was that the feature would be made optional and the screenshots would also be more secure.
Microsoft initially wanted to test the new version in a limited circle of the Windows Insiders channel before rolling out the feature across the board. This will now only happen in December. Microsoft made this decision because it needed more time to make the feature “safe and reliable,” it confirmed to The Verge.
