Starting today, OpenAI is making SearchGPT available to paying users within ChatGPT.
Starting today, paying subscribers can access SearchGPT, OpenAI’s AI-powered search engine. Access for other users will be phased in over the coming weeks.
SearchGPT is located in ChatGPT
The search engine is integrated into ChatGPT’s existing interface and therefore does not represent a separate product. SearchGPT uses input prompts to decide whether to display search results or ready-made answers. Users can also enter search queries manually.
During a demo, we saw how the feature works when searching for Apple stocks and Italian restaurants, displaying interactive maps and relevant information. The search technology is based on a refined version of GPT-4. ChatGPT’s search functionality is available on iOS, Android and desktop and uses technologies such as Microsoft’s Bing.
What is striking is that OpenAI chooses not to display advertising in search results. This is not planned for the time being. AI-powered search is much more expensive than the traditional method, and it’s not yet clear how the company will open the feature to free users. Free users have limited use of this search model.
Recently, the cost of a ChatGPT subscription was increased from 20 euros to 22 euros per month and this price could double again in the next five years. This is not surprising because the chatbot costs a lot of money. The new features do not make the cloud infrastructure behind ChatGPT any cheaper. However, this doesn’t bother users so much, because in August the tool had two million paying subscribers. This number will likely only increase.
