VMware is responding somewhat to criticism of the renewed offering under Broadcom’s leadership. Specifically, the company is working on the storage modalities that apply to the vSphere Foundation bundle. From now on there will be more memory per core. We cannot describe this adjustment as an addition, because the price also increases.
With the acquisition of VMware, Broadcom forced its customers into large package subscriptions, even though these almost exclusively benefit the largest customers. Other parties primarily see higher costs for packages that are not tailored to their needs. One of the many criticisms was the storage for vSphere Foundation. It was limited to 100 GiB per core. Do you need more storage space? Then you had to take more cores.
Since the competition is relying heavily on higher memory capacity, VMware is now adjusting the offer to 250 GiB per core. That sounds good, except that the upgrade isn’t optional. 250 GiB will become the standard and the price will rise with it. Even for those who need 100 GiB per core, vSphere Foundation becomes 11 percent more expensive.
Broadcom and VMware are meeting demand at the high end of the market but continue to leave abandoned customers behind. CIOs have criticized Broadcom’s behavior since the acquisition, but criticism from smaller parties appears to have had little effect. Broadcom sticks with its mandatory packages based on vSphere Foundation, Cloud Foundation and vSphere Standard. A variant called VMware vSphere Enterprise Plus will be released with some additional functions, although it is not tailored to smaller customers.
