The PS5 Pro won’t convince, we’ll tell you the good, the bad and the ugly

Today is the launch day of the PS5 Pro, the intergenerational refresh that caused a lot of controversy when it was officially introduced due to its high price, and if we make a direct comparison with the original PS5 without an optical drive, the new Sony model It costs twice as much as that one.

The numbers don’t lie. The PS5 Digital will hit the market at the end of 2020 with a price 399.99 eurosand had a support to place it vertically. PS5 Pro costs 799 euros and has no such support. Sony later increased the price of the PS5 and stopped including vertical support in the Slim version, but despite these changes, the price difference between the two is still very large, because we are talking about almost 350 euros more.

PS5 Pro disc drive

Sony’s strategy with the PS5 Pro was very different from what we saw with the PS4 Pro This console was launched at the same price as the PS4 and Sony reduced the price of the PS4 by 100 euros. Thanks to this movement, we were able to buy a at the time PS4 for 299 euros and PS4 Pro for 399 euros, a much more reasonable and easier to assimilate difference since it was only 100 euros more expensive.

With this generation, Sony kept the price of the PS5 Slim the same high in all its versions and launched an extremely expensive PS5 Pro, which did not convince the media that had the opportunity to test it. Most emphasize that the price of this console is too high and that improvement that brings they do not justify price difference between this model and the original.

If you have a PS5, it’s not worth buying a PS5 Pro

It’s a conclusion we can draw after reading several articles in credible media, and it’s logical. We are talking about a console that improves the performance and quality of graphics in games, but these improvements They don’t make up for the huge price difference. What does the PS5 Pro have compared to the PS5.

If you don’t have this console, you shouldn’t even go straight for the Pro version, it’s a difficult decision that you’ll have to consider based on your budget and your goals. It is true that this model is more powerful, but nor does it offer such a radically different experience enough to make it worth spending almost twice as much.

With the PS5 Pro, Sony promised that we would be able to enjoy the PS5 quality mode at 60 FPS, and this has been fulfilled, but this does not mean that we have gotten rid of 30 FPS, because there are many games that also have special modes to take advantage of the greater graphical power of this console and that they also eventually move to 30 FPS.

In general, the level of graphics quality that the PS5 Pro is capable of achieving is, according to the various analyzes published so far: similar to a mid-range PCbut it resorts to very aggressive upscaling which, depending on the game used, can only start from 864p, slightly higher than the HD standard, which is the equivalent of 720p.

Speaking of rescaling, all the media are emphasizing that PSSR is one of the most important improvements that the PS5 Pro brings and that this console is better prepared to work with ray tracing, but its possibilities to move this technology remain very limited, and that , that in Alan Wake 2 it only applies to reflexes and allows the game to run 30 FPS with very low base resolution.

That good

  • More graphics quality and 60 FPS in more games.
  • PSSR is an important improvement that defines the future of consoles lies in AI.
  • It is smaller, lighter and quieter than the original.
  • It stifles a little less with ray tracing.
  • It comes with a 2TB SSD drive.
  • Supports Wi-Fi 7.

Bad

  • 30 FPS is still a reality in many games.
  • Ray tracing limited to one effect and almost always reflections or shadows which are the least demanding.
  • The Zen 2 CPU did not receive any relevant improvements.
  • The PS5 without an optical drive offers a much better price/performance ratio.
  • PSSR has room for improvement and continues to start from very low resolutions.
  • Despite the improvements, this is not a 4K console.

Ugly

  • Many enhanced games are also available on PS4.
  • In many cases, the graphical improvements are quite subtle and don’t make much of a difference.
  • The price is insane, 799 euros without optical drive or vertical support and 950 euros with both accessories.
  • Not only is ray tracing very limited, but it still has a huge impact on performance. This technology will not be able to be seen in games at 60 FPS on PS5 Pro.

Is it worth buying a PS5 Pro?

PS5 Pro

In my opinion no, this console is not worth buying, Not because it’s a bad product, which it isn’t.but because the price at which Sony listed it is real nonsense and because the strategy adopted by the company is an insult to consumers, and we must respond to these abuses with rejection.

The launch of this console at such a high price was no accident. Sony knew it would have no competition from Microsoft, and took advantage of it put an elitist price for it and totally removed from reality. This also allowed it to maintain the overvalued price of the PS5, a console that hit the market four years ago and which today still costs 50 euros more than when it was launched.

If Sony launched the PS5 Pro with price from 600 to 650 euros My opinion would be completely different. It would offer very interesting value in this price range and would be a very competitive product in terms of quality and price, even if it came without an optical drive and without vertical support.
