The European Commission is opening a formal investigation into Corning. With its dominant Gorilla Glass product, the glass manufacturer would push competing brands into the background.

The European Commission has opened a formal investigation into Corning, a maker of Gorilla Glass. The EU fears that Corning is using exclusive contracts to exclude competing glass manufacturers. Gorilla Glass or alkaline aluminosilicate glass is a commonly used protective glass that is often used by Apple and Samsung, among others. Corning now risks a fine, but can still comply with the regulations.

Gorilla Glass

Corning is a global glass manufacturer that produces alkali aluminosilicate glass (alkaline AS glass). Corning sells this type of glass under the brand name “Gorilla Glass,” which may be familiar to many. There’s a good chance your iPhone or Samsung device is covered with this protective glass.

“Damaging a mobile phone screen is a very frustrating and costly experience. Therefore, strong competition in the production of the cover glass to protect such devices is crucial to ensure low prices and high quality glass,” said Margrethe Vestager, EU Competition Commissioner.

Exclusive contracts

The Commission suspects that Corning has exclusive supply contracts with cell phone manufacturers and raw glass processing companies. As a result, Corning would not have given competing glass manufacturers a chance in large parts of the market.

“We are investigating whether Corning, a large manufacturer of this specialty glass, may have sought to exclude competing glass manufacturers and deprive consumers of cheaper and more shatter-resistant glass,” Vestager said.

If it turns out that Corning is violating EU competition rules, the company will face a fine. The glass manufacturer still has the opportunity to avoid this by making a series of commitments that can stop the antitrust investigation.

“Corning has and will continue to be committed to complying with all applicable rules and regulations wherever it does business,” Corning spokeswoman Meredith Hoing said in a statement to The Verge.
