Putin congratulates Trump on victory; ‘he’s a brave man’

Russian President, Vladimir Putin congratulated Donald Trump for his victory in the US elections, and at the same time he showed a willingness to open nuclear disarmament negotiations and strategic stability with the new US administration.

“I take this opportunity to congratulate you on your election to the presidency of the United States,” he said, speaking at the Valdai Debate Club, which takes place in the seaside resort of Sochi (Black Sea).

True to form, Putin was in no hurry to congratulate Trump on the election results, something that major world leaders, including the Kremlin’s allies, had already done.

Putin impressed by Trump’s courage

Putin, who was also re-elected to another six-year term in March, defended Trump against accusations that he is “a businessman who knows little about politics.”

“His behavior at the time of the attempt on his life impressed me. He turned out to be a brave man,” he said, referring to the attack Trump suffered at a rally in Pennsylvania in July.

He added that “it’s not just about raising your hand and calling to fight for your ideals, it’s not all about that, although human power is also shown in emergency situations.”

“And he showed himself very correctly, bravely, like a man,” he emphasized.

Optimism for a second term

Regarding Trump’s policies since he was sworn in as president on January 20, Putin was optimistic based on statements he made during the campaign.

“This will be his last mandate. What you are going to do is your business. But what he has said publicly so far (…), what has been said about his desire to restore relations with Russia, to help end the Ukrainian crisis, deserves at least attention,” he said.

Moreover, he opined that in his first term (2016-2020), Trump “seemed as if he was being hounded on all sides, and he was afraid to move to the right or left and say one too many words.”

Putin also showed a “readiness” to maintain contacts in the near future with the future American president, with whom he held a summit in Helsinki in mid-2018.

“As I said, we will work with any head of state who has the trust of the American people. In practice this will be the case,” he assured.

Post-war nuclear negotiations

In turn, Putin expressed his readiness to enter into a dialogue on issues of strategic stability with the new US administration, although the Kremlin recently assured that such negotiations under no circumstances could be held until the end of the war.

“We never refuse to continue dialogue on issues of strategic stability. But I don’t reveal any secrets, and everyone knows (…) that the United States and its satellites are aiming to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia,” he said.

The Russian president advocated negotiations “with open cards.” “We’ll see how the new administration formulates its proposals—if it has any—,” he added.

“We understand our responsibility as a country with its potential, the number of nuclear warhead carriers and the quality of modern weapons,” said Putin, who in his speech called Russia the largest nuclear power on the planet.

He was referring in particular to stalled negotiations with Washington over the New START treaty, which expires in 2026 and is the last strategic disarmament treaty between the two superpowers. (EFE)
