A US judge in Texas ruled Thursday against President Joe Biden’s program that offers a path to citizenship for some spouses of US citizen immigrantsIt’s a blow that could stall the program in Biden’s final months in office.
District Judge J. Campbell Barker found that the program, which offers a path to citizenship for the approximately 500,000 immigrants who entered, illegally in the US if married to US citizensexceeded Biden’s executive powers.
The initiative known as Keeping families together was launched in August, but was blocked a few days later by Barker, who left it frozen while examining a legal challenge filed by Texas and a coalition of U.S. states with Republican attorneys general.
Biden, a Democrat, announced the program in June before dropping out of the presidential race and setting the stage for Vice President Kamala Harris to challenge hard-line immigration Republican Donald Trump.
Trump defeated Harris in Tuesday’s election and is expected to launch a sweeping crackdown on immigration that will likely include revoking Biden’s immigrant spouse initiative, which the Trump campaign called a “mass amnesty” that would encourage illegal immigration.
Americans believe that immigration is the most pressing problem These are questions Trump must address when he takes office in January, and overwhelming majorities believe he will order mass deportations of people living in the United States illegally, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that ended on Thursday.
The Biden administration may appeal Thursday’s ruling. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
