Anthropic and Amazon are reportedly in renewed discussions about investing. Amazon would have an additional condition this time.
Anthropic is looking for fresh capital to stay competitive with OpenAI, and according to The Information, old friend Amazon is ready to open its pockets again. Amazon has already invested four billion dollars in Anthropic in two tranches. The amount involved is unknown because Amazon itself has not yet communicated anything.
Investing in Anthropic is also interesting for Amazon. Both companies have built a similar relationship to OpenAI and Microsoft. In return for the capital, AWS is Anthropic’s cloud partner of choice. AWS and its customers therefore receive priority over Anthropic’s technology.
Anthropic is still a young company, but has quickly established itself as a major challenger to OpenAI. The company achieved great success with the third generation of its LLM Claude, which is available in various versions. Anthropic needs capital and data center capacity to further improve Claude and finds it at AWS. Google also pulled Anthropic by the sleeve, but the love for AWS turned out to be greater.
According to the information, AWS would now include an additional clause in the marriage contract. Anthropic, like most AI companies, now uses Nvidia GPUs to train its AI models. AWS makes its own chips, Graviton, and would prefer Anthropic to use them from now on.
