Sony is preparing its first 100-megapixel sensor. Moreover, its resolution can be exactly 100 MP instead of 108 MP as in Samsung’s competitive developments. The new sensor will be part of the IMX800 series, but interestingly, it’s designed for mid-range models, not flagship smartphones. It is expected to be a direct competitor to the Samsung HM2 sensor used in the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G and Redmi K50 Pro. In addition to the new IMX800 series sensor, the company is preparing a larger sensor than the high-end IMX900 series and will definitely be used in flagships.
Samsung is also preparing a new image sensor for smartphones. There is no data on resolution but the optical format will reportedly be larger than the ISOCELL GN2 found on the Mi 11 Ultra smartphone. So it will be greater than 1/1.12 inch. By all accounts, it’s a one-inch sensor.
Unfortunately, when the premiere of these sensors will be announced. Given that the first-winter Galaxy S23 Ultra has a 200-megapixel sensor introduced by Samsung in early September last year, we can assume that new sensors from Sony and Samsung will appear in finished devices no earlier than in the middle of next year.
