AMD continues to gain market share. The processor specialist generated 33.9 percent of sales in the lucrative server market. The chip manufacturer is also doing well in other industries.
AMD posted good results in the third quarter of 2024. According to Mercury, 33.9 percent of revenue in the server market this quarter went to AMD, after a revenue increase of 2.7 percentage points compared to the same quarter last year. The share increases slightly compared to the second quarter (0.1 percentage points) and 0.9 percentage points compared to the previous year.
These numbers show that AMD’s momentum in the server market is still significant. Although Intel dominates the segment, AMD can delight customers with the price-performance ratio of its Epyc processors. A leaner setup helps, as does collaboration with the manufacturer TSMC. This ensures that AMD’s chips are currently at the forefront of technological capabilities. The latest chips continue this trend.
If we look not at the share of sales but at the units delivered, we see an increase from 23.3 percent in the previous year to 24.2 percent. This value is slightly lower, suggesting that the more expensive, high-end Epyc processors perform well.
The chip designer also makes a name for himself in other market segments. The market share in the desktop market, based on sales, increased by 9.6 percentage points to 27.3 percent compared to the previous year. The proportion of chips shipped is slightly higher at 28.7 percent.
Intel has a bigger lead in the laptop market. AMD sold 22.3 percent of the chips there, good for 19.2 percent of the distributed pie. This is also a slight increase. Overall, AMD now holds 24 percent of the processor market in terms of units sold and 26.5 percent in terms of sales.
AMD thus continues to benefit from the difficult period that Intel is going through to consolidate its presence in the CPU market. The manufacturer is still a challenger, but a big one.
