Cuban prosecutors said Saturday that at least three provinces reported arrests for public disorder and “criminal acts disturbing the order and tranquility of citizens” in the midst of a serious energy crisis that has led to widespread power outages across the island.

“In Havana, Mayabeque and Ciego de Avila, criminal cases involving crimes of assault, public disorder and damage within the framework of which it was decided to apply a preventive measure in the form of pre-trial detention to the accused,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

“Unforeseen situations in the electricity system and those caused by weather events that affect the country have had a direct impact on the population and the economy,” he clarified, adding that “acts of aggression against authorities and territory inspectors “They caused bodily harm and created a disturbance.”

The prosecutor’s office emphasized that these actions “must be accompanied an atmosphere of order, discipline and respect for authority.”

“Facts of this kind oppose selfless and supportive attitudes of all those who, in the current circumstances, are dedicated to the task of rebuilding the country,” he repeated.

Government of Cuba recently declared an energy emergency due to a crisis that goes beyond the electricity shortage that has forced Cubans to live with rolling blackouts. This situation, coupled with shortages of food, water, medicine and increasing insecurity among citizens, has led human rights activists to speak of a “lack of confidence.”
