Users will be able to start using the long-awaited GIMP 3.0 next year after nearly twenty years of working with the 2.0 build.

The long-awaited rollout of GIMP 3.0 is just around the corner: a release candidate version of the photo editing software has been released. Tom’s Hardware knows it is almost ready to be released publicly to identify and fix any bugs.

What has changed?

According to the official blog, there are several innovations in terms of performance, usability and compatibility. The updated UI is still recognizable, but is heavily modernized and scalable for high-resolution screens. That’s why the icons were vectorized and converted from PNG to SVG files, which makes them appear much sharper.

The remaining improvements took place mainly in secret. The application is now compatible with multi-layer TIFF formats and supports 64-bit BMP. Color management allows you to select colors more precisely and new API functions are available. These API functions make it easier to import older plugins and scripts into GIMP 3.0. Small changes that make for a much smoother user experience overall.

The stable build of version 3.0 is not immediately available as this version needs to “feel stable enough” first, the team says.
