Argentina was the only country to vote this Monday at the UN General Assembly against resolution on the rights of indigenous peoples, what was the first vote since then Gerardo Wertein heads the Argentine Foreign Ministry after the sudden termination Diana Mondino “failure to comply” with government guidelines when voting in this body regarding US blockade of Cuba.
The text was continued 168 votes in favor and seven abstentions. (Bulgaria, Slovenia, France, Lithuania, Mali, Laos and Romania). The resolution decides to extend the mandate UN Voluntary Fund for indigenous peoples to help representatives of organizations and communities take part in meetings related to the protection of cultural and natural heritage.
Delegations generally emphasized disproportionate impact of climate change on indigenous peoples due to its direct dependence on ecosystems, while Argentina opposed some of the terms because it considered them “ambiguous and broad.”
The Argentine delegation noted that the draft does not sufficiently guarantee the universal rights of indigenous peoples without discrimination and that “traditional practices may lead to the acceptance of practices that are contrary to the rights of women and girls, health and scientific progress.”
Mondino was removed from office just a few hours after Argentina votes in the UN General Assembly in favor of cancellation US embargo on Cuba.
The Argentine government led by Javier Miley explained “a posteriori” that we should have voted “no” along with USA and Israel, who you want to team up with.
