Broadcom paid $61 billion to buy VMware, making clear to the layman the enormous importance of virtualization in global technology and demonstrating its value in professional applications for decades. The advent of cloud computing infrastructure has further increased its use, as well as in personal settings, widely used for software testing.

VMware Fusion and Workstation, free for everyone

You already know that creating virtual machines requires applications to process them. They are known as hypervisors and provide the necessary separation between a virtual machine’s operating system and the hardware of the host machine, the machine where it is hosted and which shares its resources.

There are two main classifications of hypervisors, and VMware, perhaps the biggest virtualization giant in the world, has solutions for both. At no cost, the company only offered a lightweight version called the “player” that was more for testing than anything else.

The rest of the solutions were paid until their sale to Broadcom, when it was announced that the desktop clients VMware Fusion (for Mac) and Workstation Pro (for Windows) would be free, but only for personal use. Now the company extended the free service for all types of customersprofessional or enterprise, according to an announcement from Broadcom Product Marketing Director Himanshu Singh:

“From now on, VMware Fusion and VMware Workstation will leave the paid subscription model, which means that these tools can now be used for free. The paid versions of these offers (Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro) are no longer available for purchase ».

The free version includes all the features that were already used in the paid version and the manager promises that “They will have the necessary tools to successfully complete their projects and without compromise”. Customers with an active support contract will continue to have access to support through Broadcom channels and will be able to continue using the product once their existing contract ends.

Good news for this type of technology, a fast, convenient and secure method for launching or testing software to reach a larger number of users. More information and downloads.
