Trump’s victory was also a victory for Musk on a political level, but it puts a strain on X, which has seen hundreds of thousands of users decide to deactivate their accounts. According to Similaweb’s data, more than 46 million users visited X on the day of the United States elections, but more than 115,000 users decided to delete their accounts on the same day.
Such a massive migration has never been seen before. Since Elon Musk owns the social network, so many users did not decide to leave. In December 2023, over 65,000 contacts were deleted with the restoration of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. More than 115,000 accounts were disabled on November 6 alone.
More than 280,000 people worldwide deleted their accounts that day. To put it in context, when Elon Musk announced his acquisition of Twitter, losses were around 200,000.

The trend is clear: users are avoiding X. As the FT reveals, the number of users in the UK has increased from around 8 million a year ago to around 5.6 million currently. In the United States, X lost a fifth of its users.
The Guardian is the first of the major media. Centre-left British newspaper The Guardian has announced that it has officially stopped publishing on X, in a move few expected to happen so soon after the US election.
It is the first major media organization to stop sharing its articles on this social network and at the same time receiving visits this way. They do not want to “dedicate resources to a toxic platform” and “use the influence of its leader Elon Musk for political discourse,” the newspaper argued.

Bluesky is the big beneficiary. According to Bsky Stats data, the Bluesky social network currently has 15 million users. It’s still much smaller than Threads in Meta, but it’s the one that’s growing the most and knows how to attract users who aren’t happy with X.
Bluesky has been getting more than 100,000 new users per day since the election. 1 million a week, Bluesky himself explains. Network activity is also increasing rapidly; There is a 400% increase in follows, 46% more likes, and 30% more messages per day.

“Twitter” does not want to fall under Musk’s influence. The users who leave X the most are precisely the ones furthest from the owner’s ideological position. From The Guardian, they describe it as, “Without the far-right activism, without the misinformation, without the hate speech, without the bots and without all the virals that crowd the timeline.”
Bluesky is positioned as a social network more like Twitter before X. A social network where you can share your opinions without the algorithm determining what kind of messages appear in the main timeline.
