Pope demands effectiveness of church anti-abuse programs

Pope asked that Church Abuse Protection Programs “be effective” and contributed, in particular, diocesan initiatives that provide “comfort and assistance to those affected.”

In a message sent to the participants of the conference on the defense of the Catholic Church in Europe, organized by Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, Francis I asked for the creation of networks of “people and excellence” so that “share knowledge, support each other and ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of protection programs.”

The event, which had its grand opening this Wednesday, has presence of more than 100 experts ,in addition to victims from 25 European countries, who will discuss this issue until November 15.

“Your commitment to this cause is “a sign of the Church’s ongoing efforts to protect the most vulnerable.”– Francis I emphasized in a video message broadcast at the beginning of the meeting.

The dialogue and exchange of views at your conference offer promising opportunities for greater understanding and deeper commitment to the protection of children and vulnerable adults within the Church.

For his part, the head of this commission is the American cardinal Sean O’Malley stated that it is a duty “listen and respond to those who are harmed.”

We must follow due process when investigating allegations and must show strong leadership in taking the necessary steps to best prevent any instances of abuse.
