Gabbard served as a member of Hawaii’s lower house from 2013 to 2021 and then ran in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary alongside current President Joe Biden and now-Vice President Kamala Harris.
During the campaign’s second debate, Gabbard gained notoriety by attacking Harris’ prosecutorial record, accusing her of targeting the disadvantaged.
As Director of National Intelligence, a ministerial-level position, Gabbard will oversee the U.S. intelligence community and its many agencies, including the CIA, NSA and the FBI’s intelligence divisions.
“I know Tulsi will bring to our intelligence community the fearless spirit that has defined her distinguished career defending our constitutional rights and bringing strength to the world,” Trump said in a statement announcing her appointment.
During her time as a congresswoman, Gabbard traveled to Syria and said she met with Bashar al-Assad at a time when Washington was supporting the side trying to overthrow him.
In addition to her political career, Gabbard is a military veteran and served three times in combat zones in the Middle East and Africa.
Gabbard left the Democratic Party in 2022 and quickly turned to conservative media, appearing repeatedly on the Fox News Channel.
In the final stages of the campaign, he appeared at a Trump event in North Carolina to announce he was joining the Republican Party and advised him in his only debate against Harris. (EFE)
