Nothing learned in a year: Nord company published traditional statistics of popular passwords

This time the statistics were collected from 2.5 terabytes of credentials. According to Channel 24’s news, based on the Nord report, hackers stole all these login information and passwords from users in 44 countries around the world.

The world’s most popular passwords

  • It probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone that the most popular password is “123456,” which hackers cracked in less than a second. This password is reportedly used by 3,018,050 people.
  • In second place is “123456789”, which can be hacked just as easily. It was installed by 1,625,135 people who were probably less lazy than users to add three extra digits to their passwords. Although it didn’t save them.
  • In third place is the password “12345678”, which was determined by 884,760 people.
  • The fourth, fifth and sixth places were solemnly awarded to the passwords “password”, “qwerty123” and “qwerty1”, respectively. It was founded by an average of 600,000 people.
  • The list also included the passwords “111111”, “12345”, “secret”, “000000”, “abc123”, “dragon” and “monkey”.

Generally, very simple passwords consisting of the same numbers, different numbers or letters placed side by side on the keyboard are valid. Users also choose names, superheroes, games, favorite foods, countries, and of course the immortal “hello123” as passwords.

Statistics in Ukraine

  • The combination “123456” also became the most popular password in Ukraine.
  • The second place also coincides with the world ranking – “123456789”.
  • “qwerty123” takes the third place.
  • Fourth – “qwerty”.
  • The password “12345678” ranks fifth.

How to choose a reliable password

If you want to minimize the possibility of your account being hacked, you should pay attention to a strong password.

  • Do not use easy and understandable words and phrases consisting of existing words. It is better to choose a random set of letters.
  • Use letters in different situations – lowercase and uppercase.
  • Use numbers and symbols.
  • Keep your password long (8 or more characters).
  • Do not use the same passwords on different sites.

“h-S23/f2^rKA!” Don’t forget your password. It will be much better than “qwerty12345”. Also, do not forget about two-factor authentication, which will save you even if hackers somehow manage to guess a complex password.
