Paraguayan President Santiago Peña was hospitalized on Monday in Rio de Janeiro, where he was attending the G20 summit, his office said, saying he had an “indisposition” that was being treated at the city’s Samaritan Hospital.

“He is currently undergoing appropriate medical examinations,” the president’s statement said. “The hospital will issue a medical report in the next few hours.”

Vice President Pedro Alliana later told X that Pena was “fine and awaiting the results of a medical examination.”

The hospital did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for more information.

Peña, a 46-year-old economist who took office last August as a member of the Colorado Conservative Party, was invited to the summit of world leaders by his neighbor Brazil.

An hour earlier, he said in a social media post that he and his colleagues discussed major global issues and shared photos with the leaders of Qatar and Nigeria.

“Our country is determined to demonstrate that its greatness lies in its vision and actions to create a fairer world full of opportunity for all,” he said. (Reuters).
