The Sony PlayStation 5 game console is much more powerful than its predecessor. But all that power under the hood needs some serious cooling. The modder was able to use the console liquid cooling, and in the process not only lowered the temperature, but also ensured the silence of the “PS5 Slim” under pressure.

Much of the Sony PS5’s thickness can be attributed to the very large radiators. The system has been carefully designed and carefully optimized to prevent the various system components from overheating. Eliminate cooling and PS5 will stop working quickly. However, without the large heatsinks, the PS5 motherboard is actually pretty thin.

Matt from DIY Perks recently disassembled his Sony PlayStation 5. Not surprisingly, the main goal was to reduce the footprint of the console. So, the modder started replacing the factory air cooling system with a custom made water cooling system.

As can be seen from the highly detailed video, the heavily modified liquid-cooled Sony PS5 received a custom three-layer copper water unit to keep everything cool. While the smart device lacks Sony’s sophistication and brightness, water cooling is surprisingly efficient.

Matt coated the SoC in liquid metal and used the original bracket to hold the main radiator plate in place. They also placed gaskets and hot melt adhesive on the heat sink to help dissipate the heat from the secondary chips as they heat up.

The voltage regulator (VRM) modules Sony installs inside the PS5 are extremely powerful and require a powerful cooling system. To cool the VRM, Matt modified the PS5 heat source pipe to connect it to the secondary fluid channel to form a composite cooling stack. Replaced the internal power supply unit (PSU) with an external power supply unit that powers the radiator and water cooling pump.

It goes without saying that the temperature inside the water-cooled Sony PS5 is much higher than the standard air-cooled version. Also, the result is a powerful game console with just 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) thickness. It’s even thinner than NVIDIA Shield. Source
