Two underwater internet cables damaged in the Baltic Sea

According to 24 Channel news, Lithuanian telecommunications operator Telia reported damage to its cable. LRT.

Internet cable connected Lithuania and Sweden. According to Telia’s chief technology officer Andrius Semeshkiavičius, the outage occurred around 10 a.m. on November 17 and caused a sudden loss of communication.

Although the cable has experienced failures before, this is the first time it has broken so completely. Semeshkevičius explained typical cable damage caused by shipping, such as improperly anchored ships snagging the cable in shallow water.

However, he pointed out a unique situation in this case: the damage to the Telia cable immediately after the damage to a similar cable between Finland and Germany aroused suspicion.

What is known about these cables

The damaged Telia cable crosses the path of the 1,200-kilometer C-Lion1 cable connecting Helsinki to the German port of Rostock, which Finnish operator Cinia reported damaged earlier this week.

Semeshkievičius emphasized that the junction only covers an area of about 10 square meters, which shows that the damage to both cables was not accidental.

It is clear that this was not the accidental fall of a ship’s anchor; it could be something more serious
– he noticed.

How will it affect communications and whether it can be repaired?

The outage in the Telia cable caused a decrease in Internet bandwidth in Lithuania by a third. Communications were temporarily rerouted through backup lines, reducing the impact on customers. Repair of the Finland-Germany C-Lion1 cable is estimated to take 5 to 15 days.

While shipping remains the potential primary cause of damage, investigations are ongoing to determine whether other factors contributed to these events. Some sources even suggested this. Damage to underwater cables may extend to Russia.
