The Peruvian justice system handed down 36 months of preventive detention for the president’s brother on Tuesday. Dina Boluartewhile prosecutors are investigating him on suspicion of influence peddling, bribery and membership of a criminal organization in a case that may involve the president of the Andean country.

For its part, the prosecutor’s office demanded the arrest of Nicanor Boluarte for supposedly exercising “de facto power” appoint officials since his sister took power in late 2022 after his predecessor Pedro Castillo was fired and arrested after trying to dissolve Congress.

The decision came on the third day after Judge Richard Carhuancho will begin to consider the request for imprisonmentat the hearing without the presence of the president’s brother.

In making his decision, Judge Carhuancho found that “there is a high degree of probability” that the president’s brother was involved in the alleged crimes under investigation.

He also stated that Nicanor Boluarte is in danger of escaping due to his proximity to the “spheres of power” as he is the brother of the president of a South American country.

Nicanor Boluarte In May he was provisionally detained for several days.when police raided her home as part of a tax investigation on charges of illegally enriching the Peruvian ruler for the use of luxury watches that would have exceeded her economic ability to own them.

Boluarte, whose popularity has fallen to historic levels and should rule until July 2026denied the accusations.

Peru’s president has also faced a tax investigation since last year for allegedly involved in dozens of deaths in the anti-government protests of late 2022 and early 2023 at the start of his reign. (RTS)
