Photographer captured an all-black penguin

Belgian wildlife photographer Yves Adams, who recently went on an expedition to the subantarctic island of South Georgia in the South Atlantic, took a photo of an extraordinary penguin there.

This penguin is covered with black feathers, it does not have the characteristic white belly and yellow spots.

Scientists believe that such an unusual color is caused by a mutation – melanism. It is the opposite of albinism and is characterized by an excessive amount of melanin. Melanism manifests itself as almost entirely black or dark colors in animals and birds.
